This summer, we invited “Dr Bike”, the free bike repair and maintenance service run by the Broken Spoke Bike Co-op, to hold community drop-in sessions at Cutteslowe Community Centre on two afternoons, 24 May and 18 July.
The Dr Bike mechanic was supported by two of our own expert volunteers, and between them they diagnosed, safety-checked, tuned and carried out minor repairs on more than 40 bikes.
It quickly became clear that demand for the service was greater than the capacity of three men labouring under the hot sun on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon! Sadly, we had to turn some people and their bikes away. However, it was fantastic to see such enthusiasm for cycling among people of all ages, and we are now considering how best to continue supporting and encouraging active travel in our community.
In the meantime, a huge thank you to Johnny (aka Dr Bike), Martin and Andy, who gave up their weekend afternoons to provide such a valuable service to the community.
We hope to see Dr Bike back in Cutteslowe again soon!
